TCP Stream Sentry | Previous | Next Contents |
In addition to the Sentry types specifically built into PageSentry, there are many other types of TCP/IP stream-based servers. Several of these can be tested using the Stream Sentry type. For example, NNTP (News) servers can effectively be tested using a Stream Sentry. Figure 13 shows the TCP Stream Edit Sentry dialog box.
To configure the Sentry, fill in the appropriate fields. In addition to the common configuration options, the TCP Stream Sentry has the following options:
- Machine Name
- This is the name or IP Address of the machine that you would like to test, in the form "mymachine.yourcom.com".
- Port Number
- This is the port number of the service you would like to test. Since Stream Sentries can test a number of different types of services that typically run on different TCP/IP ports, the default port will almost certainly be incorrect for the server you are testing. Check the server documentation or configuration to see what the correct TCP/IP port it is using for incoming connections.
- Checksum
- The Stream Sentry works by initiating a TCP/IP connection with the server at the given address and port. Once the connection is established, PageSentry waits for the server to send a welcome message or some other data that initiates the session. The first 16 bytes of this data stream are then used to compute a checksum, used in later tests by PageSentry to verify that the status of the server has not changed.
The Checksum field is not editable, but is filled in by PageSentry when the first test has been completed. To complete the creation of a Stream Sentry, enter the address and port into the fields discussed above, then click the "Execute Test" button. PageSentry will then establish the connection, read the response data stream, and fill in the Checksum.
For some examples of TCP Stream Sentry uses, see the TCP Stream Example.
